Alloying
Titanium alloy, a sophisticated blend of titanium with other elements, exhibits two crystalline forms: the close-packed hexagonal structure α titanium under 882ºC and the body-centered cubic β titanium above 882ºC.
Alloying elements are categorized into three groups based on their influence on the phase transition temperature:
1. α Stabilizers: Elements like aluminum, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen which increase the phase transition temperature. Aluminum, the chief alloying element, notably enhances the alloy's strength at both room and elevated temperatures, reduces specific gravity, and boosts elastic modulus.
2. β Stabilizers: Elements that reduce the phase transition temperature. They are further divided into isomorphic (e.g., molybdenum, niobium, vanadium) and eutectoid types (e.g., chromium, manganese, copper, iron, silicon).
The isomorphic types include molybdenum, niobium, and vanadium, while eutectoid types encompass chromium, manganese, copper, iron, and silicon.
3. Neutral Elements: Elements such as zirconium and tin, which have minimal impact on phase transition temperature.
Impurities like oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen significantly affect titanium alloys. High solubility of oxygen and nitrogen in the α phase strengthens the alloy but decreases plasticity, necessitating strict content controls: oxygen (below 0.15-0.2%) and nitrogen (0.04-0.05%). Hydrogen's minimal solubility in the α phase can lead to brittleness if hydrides form, thus its content is managed below 0.015%. Hydrogen can be removed through vacuum annealing due to its reversible dissolution in titanium.
