Nickel-based superalloys and cobalt-based superalloys are categorized based on their preparation processes into deformation superalloy, casting superalloy, and powder metallurgy superalloy. Each type leverages different strengthening methods such as solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, oxide dispersion strengthening, and fiber strengthening. Superalloys excel in the production of high-temperature components like turbine blades, guide blades, turbine discs, high-pressure compressor discs, and combustion chambers for aviation, naval, and industrial gas turbines. Additionally, they are pivotal in the manufacture of space vehicles, rocket engines, nuclear reactors, petrochemical equipment, and energy conversion devices like coal conversion systems.

High Temperature Alloy Pipe Manufacturing Process

For manufacturing processes that involve minimal or no aluminum and titanium content, electric arc furnaces or non-vacuum induction furnaces are typically employed. However, for superalloys containing aluminum and titanium, vacuum smelting is crucial to control element burn-off and reduce gas and inclusion contamination. To further enhance the quality of the metals, a dual process combining smelting and secondary remelting is utilized, employing electric arc furnaces, vacuum induction furnaces, and non-vacuum induction furnaces for smelting, alongside vacuum consumable furnaces and electroslag furnaces for remelting.
Solid solution strengthened alloys and ingots with low aluminum and titanium (less than 4.5%) are suited for forging. Alloys enriched with aluminum and titanium typically undergo extrusion or rolling, followed by hot rolling, with some products requiring additional cold rolling or cold drawing. Large diameter alloy ingots or cakes necessitate the use of hydraulic presses or fast forging hydraulic presses for forging.
Highly alloyed and hard-to-deform alloys are extensively used in precision casting, such as for turbine blades and guide blades. Modern directional crystallization processes have been developed to minimize grain boundaries perpendicular to the stress axis and porosity in cast alloys. This technique fosters the growth of parallel columnar crystals without transverse grain boundaries. Achieving directional crystallization demands establishing a substantial axial temperature gradient and effective axial heat dissipation between the liquidus and solid phase lines. Additionally, single crystal blade manufacturing is being explored to eliminate grain boundaries completely.
