Our manufacturing process for superalloys, especially those void of or low in aluminum and titanium, employs electric arc furnaces or non-vacuum induction furnaces. Superalloys containing aluminum and titanium, due to their sensitivity to atmospheric smelting, utilize vacuum smelting to minimize element loss and inclusion contamination. To further purify the alloy and refine the crystal structure, we adopt a dual process of smelting followed by secondary remelting using electric arc furnaces, vacuum induction furnaces, and non-vacuum induction furnaces, as well as vacuum consumable and electroslag furnaces for remelting.
Solid solution strengthened alloys and low aluminum/titanium alloy ingots (with less than 4.5% combined aluminum and titanium) are suitable for forging. Alloys with higher aluminum and titanium content are extruded or rolled, followed by hot rolling, with some products undergoing additional cold rolling or drawing. Large diameter alloy ingots or cakes require forging by hydraulic or fast forging hydraulic presses.
Highly alloyed and less deformable materials are often employed in precision casting, particularly for turbine and guide blades. Recent advancements in directional crystallization processes help eliminate undesirable grain boundaries and porosity, resulting in columnar crystals aligned with the stress axis. Further research into single crystal blade manufacturing aims to completely eliminate grain boundaries, enhancing performance (see metal solidification).
