Titanium alloy is a high-performance material created by incorporating various elements into titanium. It exists in two crystal forms: α-titanium (hexagonal close-packed) below 882ºC and β-titanium (body-centered cubic) above 882ºC.
Alloying elements are categorized based on their impact on phase transition temperatures:
1.α stable elements: Stabilize the α phase, raising the phase transition temperature. These include aluminum, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. Aluminum, the primary alloying element, significantly boosts the alloy's strength at both room and high temperatures, reduces specific gravity, and enhances elastic modulus.
2.β stable elements: Stabilize the β phase, lowering the phase transition temperature. These can be isomorphic or eutectoid. The application of titanium alloy products
Isomorphic β stable elements include molybdenum, niobium, and vanadium. Eutectoid β stable elements include chromium, manganese, copper, iron, and silicon.
3.Neutral elements: Have minimal impact on phase transition temperatures, such as zirconium and tin.
Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen are primary impurities in titanium alloys. Oxygen and nitrogen strengthen the α phase substantially but reduce plasticity. Typically, titanium contains 0.15-0.2% oxygen and 0.04-0.05% nitrogen. Hydrogen, with minimal solubility in the α phase, can form brittle hydrides if overly present. Thus, hydrogen content is controlled below 0.015%, and excess hydrogen can be removed via vacuum annealing.

Application

In the shipbuilding industry, titanium plate is prized for its exceptional corrosion resistance, low density, shape memory, and non-magnetic properties. Titanium and its alloys find critical applications in nuclear submarines, deep-sea submersibles, atomic icebreakers, hydrofoils, hovercraft, minesweepers, propellers, whip antennas, seawater pipes, condensers, heat exchangers, acoustic devices, and fire-fighting equipment. The key titanium alloys include industrial pure titanium, titanium-zirconium alloy, and various titanium alloys.
(1) All titanium ships. F1 has extensive practical experience in manufacturing titanium boats. In the 1990s, all-titanium fishing boats or speedboats were expertly crafted by Toho Titanium Co., LTD., Nikko Industrial Co., LTD., Fuji Shin Shipyard, and Eteng Shipyard. The all-titanium ship boasts numerous advantages, such as lightweight construction, high speed, smaller engines, reduced fuel costs, lower carbon dioxide emissions, no need for surface coatings, easy-to-clean accessories, etc. However, the downsides include high material costs, complex processing and manufacturing, and the necessity for stringent protection standards. Test results demonstrate excellent speed stability, reduced vibration, and minimal noise.
(2) Atomic-powered ships. In Russia, titanium alloy has replaced stainless steel in constructing steam engines, heat exchangers, and ship coolers, effectively overcoming corrosion issues. Titanium steam engines have become prevalent in the power plants of Russian atomic icebreakers. The use of titanium alloy extends the engine's life span by up to 10 times.
(3) Propeller. Propeller materials must exhibit high strength, superior fatigue performance, and resistance to erosion and cavitation in seawater. Titanium alloy perfectly meets these stringent requirements. The U.S. Navy pioneered the use of a 1,500 mm diameter, four-bladed detachable titanium alloy propeller on a hydrofoil. China developed hydrofoil speedboat propellers in 1972, and now various specifications of titanium alloy propellers are produced, ranging from 450-1700mm in diameter. A 1200mm diameter, 130kg fixed titanium alloy propeller is also available. Long-term use shows that titanium alloy propellers last over five times longer than copper alloy propellers.
(4) Marine pumps, valves, and pipes. Traditional pumps, valves, and pipes made from copper and stainless steel endure only 2-5 years in harsh conditions. Replacing them with titanium alloy has proven highly effective, particularly for large-flow mobile seawater pipelines. According to Russian standards, ship pipelines should meet three life requirements: an initial docking maintenance period of 8-9 years, a service life of at least 15 years, and reliable operation for 25-30 years for all vessel types.
