Titanium alloy is a sophisticated material crafted by adding various elements to titanium. This marvel of metallurgy exists in two crystalline forms: below 882ºC, it forms a close-packed hexagonal structure known as α titanium, and above 882ºC, it morphs into body-centered cubic β titanium. Technical Specifications: 1: The chemical composition of titanium and its alloys must meet the GB/T 3620.1 standards, with permissible deviations aligning with GB/T 3620.2 upon buyer reinspection. 2: Thickness deviations adhere to Table 1 standards. 3: Width and length deviations conform to Table 2 standards. 4: Plate corners should be cut to right angles where possible, with inclines not exceeding allowable length and width deviations.

Alloying

Titanium alloy, a fusion of titanium and other elements, exists in two crystalline forms: α titanium (below 882ºC) and β titanium (above 882ºC).
Alloying elements are categorized based on their impact on the phase transition temperature:
1. α-stabilizers increase phase transition temperature, including aluminum, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. Aluminum is pivotal, enhancing strength at both room and high temperatures, reducing specific gravity, and increasing elastic modulus.
2. β-stabilizers decrease phase transition temperature, classified into isomorphic (e.g., molybdenum, niobium, vanadium) and eutectoid types (e.g., chromium, manganese, copper, iron, silicon).
The isomorphic β-stabilizers include molybdenum, niobium, and vanadium, while the eutectoid β-stabilizers comprise chromium, manganese, copper, iron, and silicon.
3. Neutral elements, like zirconium and tin, have minimal effect on phase transition temperature.
Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen are primary impurities in titanium alloys. Oxygen and nitrogen significantly strengthen the α phase but reduce plasticity, with their contents typically kept below 0.15-0.2% and 0.04-0.05%, respectively. Hydrogen, with low solubility in the α phase, can form brittle hydrides if excessive. Thus, hydrogen content is controlled below 0.015% and can be removed via vacuum annealing.

Application

Titanium plates are prized in shipbuilding for their outstanding corrosion resistance, low density, memory, and non-magnetic properties. Applications include nuclear submarines, deep submersibles, atomic icebreakers, hydrofoils, hovercraft, minesweepers, propellers, whip antennas, seawater pipes, condensers, heat exchangers, acoustic devices, and firefighting equipment. Major titanium alloy types used include industrial pure titanium, titanium zirconium alloy, and other specialized titanium alloys.
(1) All titanium ships. F1 boasts significant expertise in crafting titanium boats. During the 1990s, Toho Titanium Co., LTD., Nikko Industrial Co., LTD., Fuji Shin Shipyard, and Eteng Shipyard pioneered the manufacture of all-titanium fishing boats and speedboats. Titanium vessels offer numerous advantages such as lightweight structure, high speed, smaller engines, reduced fuel consumption, lower carbon dioxide emissions, no surface coating requirements, and easy-to-clean accessories. However, they come with high material costs, complex manufacturing processes, and stringent protection requirements. Test results affirm that these ships exhibit excellent speed stability, minimal vibration, and lower noise levels.
(2) Atomic powered ships. In Russia, titanium alloys replace stainless steel in the construction of steam engines, heat exchangers, and ship coolers, significantly mitigating corrosion damage. These titanium steam engines are extensively employed in the power plants of Russian atomic icebreakers, enhancing engine longevity by tenfold.
(3) Propeller. Propeller materials necessitate high strength, superior fatigue performance, erosion resistance, and cavitation resistance in seawater environments. Titanium alloy fulfills all these performance criteria. The U.S. Navy first utilized a 1,500 mm diameter, four-bladed detachable titanium alloy propeller on a hydrofoil. China developed hydrofoil speedboat propellers in 1972, and today various titanium alloy propellers, ranging from 450 to 1700 mm in diameter, are produced. A 1200 mm diameter fixed propeller weighing 130 kg can also be manufactured. Long-term use demonstrates that titanium alloy propellers have a service life exceeding that of copper alloy propellers by over five times.
(4) Marine pumps, valves, and pipes. Copper and stainless steel pumps, valves, and pipes experience a limited service life of only 2-5 years under harsh conditions. Titanium alloy replacements offer superior performance and are ideal for large-flow mobile seawater pipelines. Russian ship pipeline life standards specify three longevity requirements: the first docking maintenance period is 8-9 years; the service life is no less than 15 years; and all vessel types must operate reliably for 25-30 years.
