Titanium alloy, an advanced material, is formed by integrating additional elements with titanium. This alloy has two crystalline forms: α titanium (below 882ºC) and β titanium (above 882ºC).
Alloying elements are categorized based on their effect on the phase transition temperature:
1. α-stabilizing elements, which elevate the phase transition temperature: These include aluminum, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. Aluminum, in particular, significantly enhances alloy strength at both room and high temperatures, while also reducing specific gravity and increasing elastic modulus.
2. β-stabilizing elements, which lower the phase transition temperature: These can be further divided into isomorphic and eutectoid types. Isomorphic stabilizers include molybdenum, niobium, and vanadium, while eutectoid stabilizers include chromium, manganese, copper, iron, and silicon.
The former category includes elements like molybdenum, niobium, and vanadium; the latter includes chromium, manganese, copper, iron, and silicon.
3. Neutral elements, which have minimal impact on the phase transition temperature: These include zirconium and tin.
Titanium alloys contain impurities such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and hydrogen. Oxygen and nitrogen, which significantly strengthen the alloy, must be kept below 0.15-0.2% and 0.04-0.05%, respectively, as they also reduce plasticity. Hydrogen, which has low solubility in the α phase, must be kept below 0.015% to avoid brittleness from hydride formation. Excess hydrogen can be removed via vacuum annealing.

Titanium plate's application in shipbuilding leverages its exceptional corrosion resistance, low density, shape memory, and non-magnetic properties. Widely adopted in nuclear submarines, deep submersibles, atomic icebreakers, hydrofoils, hovercraft, minesweepers, propellers, whip antennas, seawater pipes, condensers, heat exchangers, acoustic devices, and firefighting equipment, titanium and its alloys serve crucial roles. Common variants include industrial pure titanium, titanium zirconium alloy, and titanium alloys.
(1) All titanium ships: With extensive practical experience, F1 excels in manufacturing titanium ships. In the 1990s, renowned companies like Toho Titanium Co., LTD., Nikko Industrial Co., LTD., Fuji Shin Shipyard, and Eteng Shipyard pioneered the creation of all-titanium fishing boats and speedboats. These vessels offer remarkable advantages such as lightweight design, high speed, reduced engine size, lower fuel consumption, diminished carbon emissions, no surface coatings, and easy maintenance. However, they come with high material costs and complex manufacturing processes. Test results confirm that these ships exhibit excellent speed stability and reduced vibration and noise.
(2) Atomic powered ships: In Russia, titanium alloy replaces stainless steel in steam engines, heat exchangers, and ship coolers, significantly overcoming corrosion challenges. Titanium steam engines are integral to the power plants of Russian atomic icebreakers, extending engine life by up to 10 times compared to conventional materials.
(3) Propeller: Propeller materials must exhibit high strength, excellent fatigue performance, and resistance to erosion and cavitation in seawater. Titanium alloy meets these demanding criteria. The U.S. Navy first utilized a 1,500 mm diameter, four-bladed detachable titanium propeller on a hydrofoil. China developed a hydrofoil speedboat propeller in 1972 and now produces a wide range of titanium alloy propellers with diameters ranging from 450-1700mm. A titanium alloy fixed propeller with a 1200mm diameter and 130kg mass has been produced, demonstrating a service life more than 5 times longer than that of copper alloy propellers.
(4) Marine pumps, valves, and pipes: Traditional pumps, valves, and pipes made from copper and stainless steel have a short service life of only 2-5 years due to harsh working conditions. Replacing these with titanium alloy improves performance significantly, making them ideal for high-flow seawater pipelines. Russian standards dictate that ship pipelines should meet three life requirements: an initial docking maintenance period of 8-9 years, a service life of at least 15 years, and reliable operation for 25-30 years for all vessel types.
