Mold material refers to the specialized steel used in creating molds, such as cold punching dies and hot forging dies. It forms the material and technical backbone of the mold manufacturing industry and is a traditional choice for mold production. The variety, specifications, and quality of mold material significantly influence mold performance. Performance Requirements
1. Annealing Processability
The material must have a wide spheroidizing annealing temperature range, low and consistent annealing hardness, and a high spheroidization rate.
2. Forgeability
The material should exhibit low resistance to hot forging deformation, excellent plasticity, a broad forging temperature range, and a low tendency for forging cracks, cold cracks, and the precipitation of network carbides.
3. Oxidation and Decarburization Sensitivity
The material should possess strong oxidation resistance at high temperatures, a slow decarburization rate, and low sensitivity to heating mediums, with a minimal tendency to produce pitting.
4. Cutting Processability
The material should allow for large cutting amounts with minimal tool wear and low surface roughness during machining.
5. Hardenability
The material should achieve a deeper hardened layer post-quenching and be hardenable using a mild quenching medium.
6. Grindability
The grinding wheel should experience minimal relative loss, allow for a large limit grinding amount without burning, and be insensitive to the quality of the grinding wheel and cooling conditions, thereby preventing abrasion and grinding cracks.
7. Hardenability
The material should attain uniform and high surface hardness after quenching.
8. Quenching Deformation Cracking Tendency
Conventional quenching should result in minimal volume change, slight shape warping and distortion, and a low tendency for abnormal deformation. It should also exhibit low sensitivity to cracking, quenching temperatures, and workpiece shapes.
