Solid solution strengthened alloys and low aluminum-titanium alloy ingots (less than 4.5% aluminum and titanium) are forgeable. Alloys with higher aluminum and titanium content undergo extrusion or rolling before hot rolling, with some products requiring additional cold rolling or cold drawing. Large diameter alloy ingots or cakes necessitate forging by hydraulic or fast forging hydraulic presses.
High-alloy content and difficult-to-deform alloys are extensively utilized in precision casting to create turbine and guide blades. Recent advancements in directional crystallization aim to minimize grain boundaries perpendicular to the stress axis and reduce porosity. This process fosters grain growth in parallel columnar crystals devoid of transverse grain boundaries. Achieving directional crystallization hinges on maintaining a large axial temperature gradient and optimal axial heat dissipation. Additionally, single crystal blade manufacturing is being explored to eliminate all grain boundaries for superior performance.
