Nickel-based and cobalt-based superalloys are categorized by their preparation processes, including deformation, casting, and powder metallurgy superalloys. These materials are further classified by their strengthening methods: solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, oxide dispersion strengthening, and fiber strengthening. Superalloys are integral in manufacturing high-temperature components for turbines, such as blades, discs, and combustion chambers for aviation, naval, and industrial gas turbines. Additionally, they are essential for producing space vehicles, rocket engines, nuclear reactors, petrochemical equipment, and energy conversion devices like coal conversion units.

High Temperature Alloy Pipe Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing process for superalloys with minimal or no aluminum and titanium generally involves smelting in an electric arc furnace or a non-vacuum induction furnace. For superalloys containing aluminum and titanium, vacuum smelting is preferred to control elemental burn-off and minimize gas and inclusions. A combined smelting and secondary remelting process can further enhance the ingot's crystal structure and inclusion distribution. Primary smelting methods include electric arc furnaces, vacuum induction furnaces, and non-vacuum induction furnaces, with remelting performed in vacuum consumable furnaces and electroslag furnaces.
Solid solution strengthened alloys and low aluminum-titanium ingots (total aluminum and titanium below 4.5%) are typically forged. Alloys with higher aluminum and titanium content are initially extruded or rolled, followed by hot rolling, and sometimes further cold rolling or drawing. Large diameter ingots or cakes necessitate forging by hydraulic or fast forging hydraulic presses.
Highly alloyed and difficult-to-deform materials are commonly used in precision casting for turbine and guide blades. Recent advancements in directional crystallization processes aim to reduce or eliminate transverse grain boundaries and porosity by growing grains in a single crystal direction, resulting in parallel columnar crystals. Achieving this requires maintaining a substantial axial temperature gradient and effective axial heat dissipation during solidification. Single crystal blade manufacturing techniques are also being explored to eliminate all grain boundaries.
