Nickel-based and cobalt-based superalloys are classified by their preparation processes into deformation superalloys, casting superalloys, and powder metallurgy superalloys. Strengthening methods include solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, oxide dispersion strengthening, and fiber strengthening. Superalloys are pivotal in creating high-temperature components such as turbine blades, guide blades, turbine discs, high-pressure compressor discs, and combustion chambers for aviation, naval, and industrial gas turbines. High Temperature Alloy Pipe Manufacturing Process

The production process for superalloys that lack or contain minimal aluminum and titanium typically involves electric arc furnaces or non-vacuum induction furnaces. For aluminum and titanium-containing superalloys, vacuum smelting is preferred to manage element burn-off, gas absorption, and inclusions. Advanced techniques combine smelting with secondary remelting to enhance inclusion distribution and ingot crystal structure. Primary smelting methods include electric arc furnaces, vacuum induction furnaces, and non-vacuum induction furnaces, while remelting methods feature vacuum consumable furnaces and electroslag furnaces.
Solid solution-strengthened alloys and low aluminum and titanium (below 4.5%) alloy ingots are forgeable. Alloys containing aluminum and titanium undergo extrusion or rolling followed by hot rolling, with some products requiring additional cold rolling or cold drawing. Large diameter ingots or cakes are forged using hydraulic or fast forging hydraulic presses.
Highly alloyed, hard-to-deform alloys are increasingly cast via precision casting for turbine and guide blades. The directional crystallization process, which aligns grain growth along a single crystal direction during alloy solidification, minimizes transverse grain boundaries and porosity. Key process conditions include maintaining a high axial temperature gradient and optimal axial heat dissipation. Recent advancements focus on manufacturing single crystal blades to eliminate grain boundaries entirely.
