White copper composition
White copper composition
White copper is a sophisticated copper-based alloy enriched with nickel as the principal additive. Its striking silver-white hue and metallic sheen earn it the name 'white copper.' Due to the infinite solubility between copper and nickel, they form a continuous solid solution, creating an α-single-phase alloy regardless of their proportions. When nickel content exceeds 16%, the alloy transitions from red to a white color, resembling silver. Higher nickel contents yield a whiter appearance. Typically, white copper contains about 25% nickel.
Application
Enhancing pure copper with nickel dramatically boosts its strength, corrosion resistance, hardness, and thermoelectric properties while reducing the resistivity temperature coefficient. Consequently, white copper exhibits superior mechanical and physical attributes compared to other copper alloys. Its good ductility, high hardness, attractive color, and deep drawing properties make it an ideal choice for shipbuilding, petrochemicals, electrical appliances, instrumentation, medical equipment, everyday items, and decorative crafts. It's also a critical material for resistance and thermocouple alloys. The primary downside is the high cost, driven by nickel being a rare strategic resource.
