The manufacturing process involves minimal or no aluminum and titanium superalloys, typically utilizing electric arc furnaces or non-vacuum induction furnaces. For superalloys containing aluminum and titanium, vacuum smelting is essential to control element loss and minimize gas and inclusion contamination. To enhance inclusion distribution and ingot crystal structure, a dual process combining smelting and secondary remelting is employed. Key smelting techniques include electric arc furnace, vacuum induction furnace, and non-vacuum induction furnace, while remelting primarily uses vacuum consumable furnace and electroslag furnace.
Solid solution strengthened alloys and ingots with low aluminum and titanium content (totaling less than 4.5%) can be forged. Alloys containing aluminum and titanium typically undergo extrusion or rolling, followed by hot rolling, with some requiring further cold rolling or cold drawing. Large diameter alloy ingots or cakes necessitate forging by hydraulic press or fast forging hydraulic press.
Highly alloyed and difficult-to-deform alloys are frequently used in precision casting, particularly for turbine and guide blades. Recent advancements include directional crystallization processes, which minimize transverse grain boundaries and porosity by promoting grain growth along a single crystal direction during solidification. Achieving this requires maintaining a significant axial temperature gradient and effective axial heat dissipation. Additionally, single crystal blade manufacturing processes are being explored to completely eliminate grain boundaries.
