The manufacturing process for superalloys with minimal or no aluminum and titanium typically involves electric arc furnace or non-vacuum induction furnace smelting. For superalloys containing aluminum and titanium, vacuum smelting is essential to control element burning loss and minimize gas and inclusions. To further enhance the quality, a dual process combining smelting and secondary remelting can be employed, using methods like electric arc furnace, vacuum induction furnace, and non-vacuum induction furnace for smelting, and vacuum consumable furnace and electroslag furnace for remelting.
Solid solution strengthened alloys and alloy ingots with low aluminum and titanium content (less than 4.5%) can undergo forging. Alloys with higher aluminum and titanium content are initially processed through extrusion or rolling, followed by hot rolling, and subsequently, some products may require further cold rolling or drawing. Large diameter alloy ingots or cakes necessitate forging by hydraulic or fast forging hydraulic presses.
Highly alloyed and non-deformable alloys are prevalent in precision casting, particularly for manufacturing turbine blades and guide blades. To mitigate grain boundaries perpendicular to the stress axis and eliminate porosity in cast alloys, directional crystallization processes are implemented. This approach promotes crystal growth along a single direction during alloy solidification, yielding parallel columnar crystals devoid of transverse grain boundaries. Achieving directional crystallization mandates maintaining a substantial axial temperature gradient and optimal axial heat dissipation between the liquidus and solid phase lines. Moreover, the development of single crystal blade manufacturing processes aims to entirely eradicate grain boundaries.
