A superalloy tube is a highly specialized alloy tube engineered to endure substantial stress while providing exceptional oxidation and corrosion resistance.
Nickel-based and cobalt-based superalloys are the two primary categories. These can be subdivided based on their preparation processes into deformation superalloys, casting superalloys, and powder metallurgy superalloys. When classified by strengthening method, the types include solid solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening, oxide dispersion strengthening, and fiber strengthening. Superalloys are indispensable in the production of high-temperature components such as turbine blades, guide vanes, turbine disks, high-pressure compressor disks, and combustion chambers in aviation, naval, and industrial gas turbines. They are also pivotal in manufacturing space vehicles, rocket engines, nuclear reactors, petrochemical equipment, and energy conversion devices like coal conversion systems.
For superalloys with minimal or no aluminum and titanium content, the manufacturing process typically uses an electric arc furnace or non-vacuum induction furnace. When smelting superalloys containing aluminum and titanium in the atmosphere, controlling element burning loss and minimizing gas and inclusions is challenging, hence the need for vacuum smelting. To further reduce inclusions and enhance the crystal structure of ingots, a combination of smelting and secondary remelting processes is employed. The primary smelting methods include electric arc furnaces, vacuum induction furnaces, and non-vacuum induction furnaces, while remelting is mainly conducted in vacuum consumable furnaces and electroslag furnaces.
Solid solution strengthened alloys and ingots with low aluminum and titanium content (under 4.5%) are suitable for forging. Alloys with aluminum and titanium are generally processed through extrusion or rolling, followed by hot rolling, and some products require additional cold rolling or cold drawing. Large diameter ingots or cakes necessitate forging via hydraulic presses or fast forging hydraulic presses.
Highly alloyed, difficult-to-deform superalloys are extensively utilized in precision casting, especially for turbine and guide blades. To mitigate grain boundaries perpendicular to the stress axis and porosities, directional crystallization processes have been developed. This technique encourages grain growth along a single crystal direction during alloy solidification, resulting in parallel columnar crystals without transverse grain boundaries. Achieving directional crystallization requires a substantial axial temperature gradient and excellent axial heat dissipation. Additionally, single crystal blade manufacturing processes are being explored to completely eliminate grain boundaries.
