The manufacturing process for superalloys with minimal or no aluminum and titanium typically involves electric arc furnace or non-vacuum induction furnace smelting. For superalloys containing aluminum and titanium, vacuum smelting is essential to control element loss and minimize gas and inclusions. Advanced methods such as smelting combined with secondary remelting are employed to enhance the structural integrity of the ingot. Key smelting methods include electric arc furnace, vacuum induction furnace, and non-vacuum induction furnace, while remelting is conducted using vacuum consumable furnaces and electroslag furnaces.
Alloys strengthened by solid solution and those with low aluminum and titanium content (less than 4.5%) are suitable for forging. Alloys containing aluminum and titanium are processed through extrusion or rolling before hot rolling, and some products require further cold rolling or cold drawing. Large diameter alloy ingots or cakes necessitate forging by hydraulic or fast forging hydraulic presses.
Highly alloyed and difficult-to-deform materials find extensive use in precision casting, especially for turbine and guide blades. Recent advancements in directional crystallization processes aim to reduce grain boundaries perpendicular to the stress axis and eliminate porosity. This process promotes the growth of parallel columnar crystals during solidification, ensuring superior structural integrity. Cutting-edge techniques for single crystal blade manufacturing have also been developed to eradicate grain boundaries entirely.
