It was discovered that the higher carbon content in Alloy 800 remarkably enhanced its creep and rupture properties compared to lower carbon materials.
To harness these superior characteristics, Special Metals specifically melted to achieve a carbon range of 0.05 to 0.10%, except
for cases where customers demanded a lower carbon content. This strategic carbon range of 0.05 to 0.10% aligns perfectly
with ASTM and ASME specifications, positioning itself at the upper tier for Alloy 800.
Special Metals meticulously gathered data on this material and submitted it to the ASME Code, which led to the
approval of heightened design stresses for Section I and Divisions 1 and 2 of Section VIII, as recorded in Code Case 1325-
7. Notably, Alloy 800H mandates not only a carbon content of 0.05 to 0.10% but also an average grain size equivalent to
ASTM 5 or coarser to meet its high-performance standards.

The introduction of Code Case 1325-7 and the prevalent use of the designation "800H" effectively eliminated the
need for the term "Grade 2," replacing it with 800H. Consequently, the material formerly recognized as Grade 1
was seamlessly rebranded as the exquisite INCOLOY Alloy 800.
